You already know how I feel about modern horror. I can't help but dislike 90% of what comes out because it's just not my style. However, I still give most of it a chance. When I hit play on There's Something Wrong With the Children, however, I was almost instantly taken back to the good old days with the soundtrack alone. The movie starts strong and descends into madness quickly. For a movie with a wild view on mental health, and no real kill scenes, it strikes hard.
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't bothered by the setting and acting. All the characters in this movie leave you stressed out, I am still not keen on the idea of a group of adults arguing a bunch, but the plot also saves this movie from being a flop for me. The whole premise is entirely weird. There's no real monster. Though it exists, we only see the human form of horror. Between the creepy kids and asshole adults you don't really have anyone to cheer on. Every character is worthy of disdain in their own way, still, somehow, the movie dragged me right in and received my full attention span. I did find myself not caring who lived or died. Normally that is an instant turn-off, but Jason and I have sat through much worse. This movie left me conflicted. Though I enjoyed it, I question why. To be honest, for once, I enjoyed a movie entirely for the story. That's a high hurdle to jump for the crew that put this film together. If I have to ask myself why I enjoyed something, I know it's because I got uncomfortable.
As for the creep factor, I have nothing but good things to say. The rest of it? It just kind of annoyed me. Although the acting was superb, I have a problem with how the film’s views on certain things are, but in reality, when someone is hurt their first goal is to lash out and drag you down with personal attacks. So it still holds merit.
So, if you are looking for a movie to make you feel a little weird (but not as weird as Skinamarink...sheesh!) in modern horror, this would honestly be it. It's made to betray your trust and question your reality, that part I don't like so much. I use horror to escape reality. However, this movie caught me off guard to make it pretty enjoyable.
