I think I have said many times... Too many times actually, that I am not a fan of British horror. They always kind of just put me to sleep. So on Jason's suggestion, I tried out The Cottage. We are taking this all the way back to 2008 because... Well because it's a great idea! It is our thought that this movie fell way too far under the radar. Every minute of it is enjoyable but it just seemed to wiz right by everyone, including myself.
Right from the start of this movie I was entertained, the silly music in driving scenes is just classic Danny Elfman-style fun music. What it turns into is hilarity, a non-stop fun film that steers away from the usual Dialogue driven British horror. The easiest way to explain the premise without giving away one of the many twists is that three local boobs decide to kidnap a bad dudes daughter. What spawns from there is pure gold. Something is always going on in this movie, even in the background. The question is, what happens when you throw a homicidal monster into the mix? To me, it was beautiful the way they introduce the big twist and ran with it after that.
The FX in this movie are simple yet complicated... Maybe that's the right way to say it? The kills were done with class instead of straight brutality, making the kills seem that much more real. The cut scenes were fun throwbacks to the 80's. The rest of the time there is great dialogue, for once I can say that about a British movie! Overall I enjoyed this movie from start to finish. I didn't find myself distracted like I usually do while watching a movie. I have seen a lot of movies and surprisingly this one fell under the radar for me and a lot of others, it deserves so much love because it was made with heart. I am glad I was given the suggestion to try it because it gave me hope for a subgenre that doesn't impress me very often.
