I admit we are in the age of "Woke" cinema. With folks like Jordan Peele and the fine... fine... folks at A24, the genre seems dead, there's no fun in mainstream horror. It's become "smart" and redundant. What we need in life is more cannibals and a good time watching a movie. There are plenty out there that fly under the radar. Children of Sin was one of those movies in my personal opinion. The acting is terrible, the story is unoriginal, and it's just a good time. Comparing this to highly promoted movies like They/Them, this runs circles around them. If you look past the flaws, it's a really fun watch, maybe I just didn't take it seriously because I love trash movies. Maybe the whole world thinks it sucks... Well, I say the world sucks!
The basic premise without spoilers is a brother and sister, one pregnant, one gay, get sent away to a religious compound for redirection. Things get weird with a three-strike system, and from there it just gets more weird and fun. There isn't a whole lot to pick apart, the story is pretty straightforward leaving no opportunity to overthink what's going on. The acting is fucking terrible, I can't even begin to lie about that. The kills are pretty basic and repetitive, but still, it's a great movie for a one-time watch, that's my honest opinion, I don't think I will go out of my way to watch it again, because I got everything I needed the first time. It definitely has the ability to pull you right in based on the douchey overly religious parents and the extremity of the Abraham House. My problem is, I didn't find any of the characters relatable, I didn't care who lived or died. All of the characters seemed to annoy me in some way, even the survivors.
So there were ups and downs throughout the whole movie for me but in the end, I just had to shut up and enjoy it, also, did not expect the twist at all. Thats what makes this enjoyable. That is why indie horror should be far more on the radar. We saw the little engine that could with Terrifier 2 once it hit theaters. Not that every movie ever made belongs in the theater, but it at least needs to be noted as a strong force.
