After putting it off until it streamed I watched Smile, the new movie supposedly making waves amongst horror fans. Here's the rundown, the movie is based on a curse. I cant say much more without spoiling it.
What I can say is it was a saving grace for elevated horror for me. Lets face it, elevated horror really isn't my thing though I do find a few enjoyable, and this was one of those movies. There's nothing besides jump sacres at first, which almost turned me off from watching this movie. However I am glad I did watch it at least once. It's a slow burn, as I said full of jump scares until about the last 10 minutes of the movie, a lot of movies do this and it annoys me. I did enjoy the story and premise, it takes a while to make any sense but the story is well written, the jump scares are perfectly times, which to me makes them expected and ruins the fun.
I truly can understand why it's making waves, it has a very creepy feel to it. The colors and filming are way up in the idea of what makes a movie scary. I wish I could say more but I think I spilled my guts out. In the end, it is one of my favorite movies to come out recently. That's a feat that's hard to do for many movies to even make it on my list. I will always be more of a campy slasher guy but this movie made me see elevated horror in a different light.
What are you waiting for? Go see it for yourself!
