Once upon a time, before two different name changes, there was a channel called Fox Family, and the content was so much better! Now the channel is lost in a world of teen dramas no one likes, and the same damn movies every weekend under the mutinous name Freeform. What I miss the most is how special the original channel was at holiday times. There were all kinds of classic cartoons, and the channel was at its best at Halloween time. Through the years, there was a movie made that I still love to this day, and it's forgotten in time by almost everyone. The movie starred Cristopher Lloyd, and it was some of his best work. The movie was called When Good Ghouls Go Bad, and it's a treasured memory, a safe place I still visit sometimes.
Based on a book by R.L. Stine, the movie was simple and directed towards children and adults alike to enjoy together. There is comedy and coming of age... Plus... Horror of course. It is a perfect stepping stone for getting into the spooky genre. It has its moments where you want to cover your childlike eyes, and also punches you in the emotional gut several times. It also shows the life of coping with loss. The movie tiptoes around life lessons all throughout. But the thing that always got me the most was the comedy involved. It put the whole story into perspective and saved the moments from being too scary for kids. I don't understand that concept because I was watching horror at 5 desensitized, but yes folks, kids can be scared of movies.
I did this throwback because through the years, this movie was totally forgotten as some of Christopher Lloyds greatest work. I want it to see the recognition it deserves, and it's so forgotten that you can even find it on YouTube for free! Give it at least one watch to appreciate a highly underappreciated movie. Open our sheltered generations to the love of scary movies! Or better yet, go find the book!
